Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026: BJP emerges as single largest party with 39 seats
Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026: BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning as many as 39 seats while Congress followed them with 39 seats.

The Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026 marked a decisive outcome in one of western Maharashtra’s key urban local body polls. After votes were cast on January 15, 2026, counting was completed and the results were declared on January 16. In a clear reflection of voter preference and party organisation at the grassroots, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party.
Final figures indicated that the BJP won 39 seats, giving it a powerful presence in the 78-member municipal corporation. This performance not only underlined the party’s organisational strength but also its appeal among urban voters prioritising development and infrastructure issues at the local level.
As far as the performance of other parties is concerned, Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party won 16 seats while Congress won on 18 out of 78 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP performed very poorly in the elections, winning only three seats, while Shiv Sena also didn't perform to expectations securing only a couple of seats.
While the opposition parties and alliances fought energised campaigns focusing on civic services, basic amenities, water supply, road development and sanitation, they were unable to match the BJP’s seat tally in this cycle.
Voter enthusiasm played a noticeable role as well; earlier reports had highlighted moderate turnout amid local concerns, though not as high as anticipated given the stakes. Issues such as urban infrastructure, cleanliness drives, and transparent governance dominated voter conversations throughout the campaign and likely influenced polling behaviour.
With the BJP achieving near-majority status on its own, post-poll negotiations with smaller groups and independents could further consolidate its position in the corporation. The results will now determine leadership roles within the civic body, including the mayor and committee chairpersons, shaping the administrative agenda for the next five years. Overall, the 2026 municipal polls reaffirmed the BJP’s foothold in this urban centre and highlighted shifting political dynamics in Maharashtra’s local governance landscape.
