Karnataka to file review petition challenging Cauvery Authority order

Karnataka bandh LIVE updates: A pro-Kannada and farmers' organisations called for a 'Karnataka Bandh' on Friday to protest the release of Cauvery river water to neighboring Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Bengaluru Police has detained members of pro-Kannada organisations protesting outside Bengaluru airport. Section 144 has been imposed in several parts of the state in view of the Bandh. The bandh was led by Kannada Okkuta leader Vattal Nagaraj from 6 am to 6 pm. The Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said a review petition will be filed before the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and the Supreme Court on September 30, stating that "we do not have water and therefore cannot release water". Earlier in the day, the CWMA endorsed the direction of its assisting body, Cauvery Water Regulation Committe (CRWC) asking Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu. The CM spoke to reporters at his Home-Office 'Krishna' after a meeting with retired Supreme Court judges and former Advocate Generals of the state. Siddaramaiah said they have given some opinion and suggestions. It was suggested to form an expert advisory committee to the government exclusively regarding the irrigation projects of the state.

    Hundreds of protestors were detained during Friday's Karnataka bandh called by pro-Kannada organisations and farmers' outfits to protest against the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. The Bengaluru Police detained over 700 agitators who tried to block roads during the day-long shutdown. Addressing a press conference in the evening, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said the bandh passed off peacefully in the city, where there were no reports of stone pelting, forceful closure of shops, and stopping of vehicles plying on roads.

    Karnataka bandh over Cauvery issue disrupts life in Bengaluru, southern parts of State

    The Karnataka bandh called by 'Kannada Okkoota' to oppose the release of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu disrupted normal life in Bengaluru and other southern parts of the State on Friday. Authorities had clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in Bengaluru Urban, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Ramanagara and Hassan districts, and declared holiday for schools and colleges there. 'Kannada Okkoota' is an umbrella organsation of Kannada and farmers' outfits. A Bengaluru bandh was observed over the same reason on Tuesday.

    Don't fight over depleted Cauvery waters, Sadhguru's message to TN and Karnataka

    Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev on Friday called for strengthening and enhancing Cauvery river rather than fighting over depleted waters. Amid the row over the sharing of the river water between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, he said, “Mother Cauvery does not know which state we belong to, but she is suffering with depletion and drying up during the summer months." "Bringing large scale tree based agriculture and vegetating the 83,000 sq kms of Cauvery basin is the only way Cauvery will flow 12 months of the year in abundance," Sadhguru said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, tagging Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in his post.

    Cauvery issue: Dy CM Shivakumar says Karnataka bandh was not needed

    Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Friday said there was no need for a bandh over Cauvery row as his government is protecting the interests of the State. A Karnataka bandh, called by various pro-Kannada organisations along with farmers' outfits, was observed today to protest the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. "There was no need for bandh, which some organisations have called," Shivakumar told reporters here.

    Karnataka bandh: List of flights cancelled

    Karnataka bandh: As many as 44 flights were cancelled due to the bandh. A total of 22 flights were supposed to depart from Bengaluru and 22 were to arrive at the Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru, The flights i of airlines AirAsia India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet were cancelled by the passenger carriers.

    Karnataka bandh: Passengers face harrowing time due to cancellation of flights, bus services

    Passengers had a harrowing time as they missed their flights, buses and trains due to the day-long shutdown. Many passengers were distraught following the cancellation of flights and bus services. The worst-hit KSRTC divisions in terms of operations were Mysuru and Chamarajanagar.

    Against the scheduled departure of 447 buses, only seven plied in Mysuru while in Chamarajanagar, eight out of 247 bus services operated. Mandya, Chikkamagaluru and Bengaluru witnessed 37.25 per cent, 51.49 per cent and 57.39 per cent operations, respectively, against the scheduled departures.

    Bus stands and railway stations in southern Karnataka and the airport in Bengaluru wore a deserted look.
