Now that Theri re-release has been postponed, several films have filled in the Pongal release space. The lineup includes Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar, Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil and Draupadi 2, all set for release on January 14 and 15, respectively.

Vijay's Theri was slated for release on January 15. The makers wrote, "As per the request from the producers of upcoming releases, we have decided to postpone the release of "Theri"."

For now, nothing changes for Jana Nayagan. Thalapathy Vijay's movie is still waiting for permission, and the Supreme Court will decide what happens next after hearing both sides on January 19.

On January 9, the Madras High Court put on hold a single judge’s direction that had asked the CBFC to immediately grant a censor certificate to Jana Nayagan. The move left the future of the film, starring actor-turned-politician Vijay, uncertain, particularly as it has drawn attention for its political overtones.

As per the cause list of the apex court, the Jana Nayagan censor board matter is likely to be taken up on January 19 by the Supreme Court, though the bench that will hear the case is yet to be assigned.

Jana Nayagan marks Thalapathy Vijay's last film before he shifts his attention to politics full-time. This is the reason why the film is even more special for his fans.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has reacted to censor block on Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "The I&B Ministry’s attempt to block ‘Jana Nayagan’ is an attack on Tamil culture. Mr Modi, you will never succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people."

The Jana Nayagan petition seeks an immediate temporary stay on the High Court’s January 9 order and also asks the Supreme Court to pass any other order it considers appropriate. The plea reads, "It is, therefore, most respectfully prayed that Your Lordships may graciously be pleased to: - a) Ex parte, through an interim or ad-interim order, stay the operation of the impugned interim Order dated 09.01.2026 passed by the High Court of Judicature at Madras in C.M.P No. 821 of 2026 in W.A. No. 94 of 2026; and/or pass such further or other orders as this Hon'ble Court may deem fit and proper AND FOR THIS ACT OF KINDNESS THE PETITIONER AS IN DUTY BOUND SHALL EVER PRAY."

It is also important to note that the CBFC has approached the Supreme Court, requesting that no order be passed in the matter without first hearing the views of the film certification authority.

The petition asks the Supreme Court to temporarily stop the High Court’s January 9 order, even before hearing the other side, if needed. It also requests the court to grant any other relief it considers appropriate.
