India's Oscar entry Barfi! has at least 10 scenes lifted from Hollywood films

Mumbai, Sep 28: Videos uploaded on YouTube in recent days have gone viral revealing too many scenes in Anurag Basu's Barfi!, India's official entry for the Oscars, which have been copied frame by frame from international classics, notably Charlie Chaplin's films. Here are ten such scenes which appear to have been lifted straight out from Hollywood films:1: The scene in which Ranbir is seated with a doll on a sofa appears to have been lifted from 1952 Gene Kelly hit 'Singin' In The Rain'.2: The bank robbery scene where Ranbir plays hide-and-seek with policeman Saurabh Shukla using a sliding door has been lifted straight from Charlie Chaplin's 1917 short film, The Adventurer.3: The ladder sequence at the beginning of the film shows Ranbir dangling from a ladder perched on a wall, even as cops try to pull him down. It appears to have been lifted from Buster Keaton's 1922 comedy classic, Cops. 4: A scene where a statue is veing unveiled and Ranbir is found hiding uder the wrap, appears to be a rehash of the sequence in Charlie Chaplin's 1931 hit 'City Lights'.5: Music director Pritam too has done his bit. His music draws strains from separate tunes that Yann Tiersen composed for the 2001 French comedy 'Amelie'.6: The bicycle chase scenes also seems to be inspired by Jackie Chan's 1983 comedy hit 'Project A'.7: The scene where Rupa Ganguly, playing Ileana's mom, tells her about her past lover, seems to have been lifted from the 2004 drama The Notebook. 8: The climax scene, where Ranbir and Priyanka die together in each other's arms, is also a copy of the similar scene in The Notebook. 9: The scene where Ranbir Kapoor walks into a door and his nose gets bent is taken from the 1952 American musical comedy 'Singin' In The Rain'.10: The story idea of the film Barfi! seems to be inspired by 1993 Johnny Depp-starrer, Benny & Joon, about a mentally ill girl falling in love with an eccentric man. Here, Ranbir is deaf and mute and Priyanka is an autistic girl and they both fall in love and die in each other's arms. Over, to Anurag Basu. As for the nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film category, the Americans at the Academy Awards would be scratching their heads over whether it's a foreign language film, or a homegrown one.
