Bengaluru: Two children die after fire in shed

Two young children lost their lives after a fire broke out in a temporary shed in Kothanur, in the north-eastern part of Bengaluru, police said on Monday. The victims were a three-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother. According to officials, the children were playing inside the shed when the incident occurred.

Their parents, who work as daily wage labourers and originally belong to Raichur district, had gone out for work. The children were left in the care of their grandmother, as was routine.

Police said the grandmother had briefly stepped out of the shed to use the toilet when the fire started. Neighbours and nearby residents rushed to help after noticing the fire, but they were unable to rescue the children in time.

Both children suffered severe smoke inhalation and burn injuries. The boy died at the spot, while the girl was taken to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Officials said the exact cause of the fire is still not known. However, they noted that clothes burning inside the shed led to thick smoke, which quickly filled the space.

A detailed investigation has been launched to determine how the fire started, police added.
