Mexico City, Sept 19: Jaguares claimed first place in Mexico's Apertura tournament with, a 5-3 victory over America that forced America coach Carlos Reinoso to resign after the match.

Jaguares have 17 points, level with Cruz Azul and Guadalajara's Chivas.

America, one of Mexico's biggest clubs, has only nine points and is near the bottom of the standings.

Tigres are in fourth place with 16 points despite, a 1-0 loss against Atlante.

In other weekend results: Puebla defeated Chivas 4-1; Cruz Azul defeated Monterrey 2-1; Pumas won 4-1 against Toluca; Pachuca defeated Atlas 4-2; Estudiantes Tecos won 2-0 against Tijuana; Morelia won over Queretaro 4-2; Santos beat San Luis 1-0.

Edgar Andrade scored twice for Jaguares as the team extended its unbeaten run to seven games.

Reinoso resigned with America, tipped in the preseason to be a title challenger, two places from the bottom of the table.

A left-foot strike from 25 meters (yards) by Jeronimo Amione gave Atlante a 1-0 victory over Tigres.

Brazilian Lucas Silva scored twice in the second half to help Puebla inflict Chivas its first home defeat of the season.

Marco Fabian put Chivas in the lead with a penalty in the 26th, but Silva equalized before halftime.

Chivas' Jonny Magallon and Kristian Alvarez were both sent off in the second half as Puebla scored three in the last 30 minutes.

A goal in each half for Cruz Azul canceled out Cesar Delgado's 10th-minute opener for Monterrey, which is in sixth place with 13 points.

Aldo de Nigris was sent off in the 79th minute for Monterrey.

Pumas ended their five-game winless streak by beating Toluca 4-1, after falling behind from a goal by Uruguayan Ivan Alonso in the 6th.

Argentine Martin Bravo set up Emilio Orrantia for the equalizer in the 23rd and then converted a penalty in first-half injury time to put Pumas in the lead.

Atlas' Argentine coach Ruben Romano resigned after the last-place team lost 4-2 at Pachuca.

Atlas' relegation rivals Tecos Estudiantes won three points against Tijuana with second half goals from Hugo Colace and Herculez Gomez.
