    Members of Lawrence Bishnoi gang delivered threat letter for Salman Khan'

    Three members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang delivered a letter threatening Bollywood actor Salman Khan and his father, writer Salim Khan, police officials claimed on Thursday.
     
    Mahakal alias Siddhesh alias Saurabh Kamble (20), an alleged member of the Bishnoi gang which is also suspected to be involved in the singer Sidhu Moosewala murder case, made this revelation during interrogation, they said.
     
    Mumbai Police's crime branch questioned Kamble in Pune on Thursday. Besides, he was also grilled by the Delhi Police's Special Cell in connection with Moosewala's murder, while a Punjab police team has also landed in Pune to question him in the same case.
     
    `Mahakal' was arrested by Pune police earlier this week.
     
    He allegedly told investigators that three members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang came from Jalour in Rajasthan and one of them placed the letter on a bench in Bandra Bandstand area where Salim Khan, noted screenplay writer and Salman's father, was sitting after his morning walk on Sunday.
     
    The letter threatened that Salman Khan and his father will soon meet Moosewala's fate.

    T'gana gangrape case: Cops to appeal to JJB to try 5 juveniles as adults

    The city police is mulling filing a petition with the Juvenile Justice Board seeking to treat the five CCLs (child in conflict with law) as adults during the trial in the gang-rape case, to ensure that the accused get the maximum punishment.

    Six people, including five juveniles have been apprehended in connection with the sexual assault of the 17-year-old girl on May 28. One juvenile was purportedly seen in videos misbehaving with the victim, but was not involved in the offence, police said.

    Hyderabad Police Commissioner C V Anand told PTI that they are considering filing a plea before the board to treat the five as adults to ensure that they receive maximum punishment.

    He had already said that stringent sections of law have been invoked against those involved in the heinous crime and the punishment under the sections could be imprisonment for life till death or even death penalty.

    Monsoon on track: IMD; warns of heavy rainfall in Arunachal, Assam, Meghalaya

    The monsoon is progressing normally and is likely to reach Maharashtra in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday. The MeT office has also warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.5 mm) in Arunachal Pradesh on June 10-11, and Assam and Meghalaya during the next five days. The monsoon accounts for around 70 per cent of the country's annual rainfall and is considered the lifeline of its agriculture-based economy. Senior IMD scientist R K Jenamani said monsoon touched the Kerala coast on May 29 and covered south and central Arabian Sea, Kerala, parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the entire northeast between May 31 and June 7.

    UP: 2 dead, 7 injured as tractor-trolley overturns in Bijnor

    Two people died while seven others were injured when the tractor-trolley in which they were travelling overturned here on Thursday, police said.The nine passengers, residents of Hamidpur village in the district, were returning from Haridwar when the accident occurred in an area under Mandaweli police station, according to police. The deceased were identified as Pankaj (20) and Manish (21), police said.Among those injured were two minors, Sane (8) and Avnish (10), they said.

    Oil regulator fines H-Energy for delays in pipeline construction

    Oil sector regulator PNGRB has fined H-Energy Private Ltd - a part of real estate giant Hiranandani group - for delays in laying a pipeline from Jaigarh in Maharasthra to Mangalore in Karnataka, via Goa, to carry natural gas to users. HEPL was granted a licence to lay the 635-kilometer Jaigarh-Mangalore natural gas pipeline (JMPL) on June 28, 2016. The line with a capacity to carry 17 million standard cubic meters per day of gas was supposed to be commissioned by June 27, 2019, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) said in an order dated June 7. Jaigarh is the port where HEPL is setting up a floating terminal to import LNG.

    BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis tests negative for coronavirus

    Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday tested negative for COVID-19, a close aide said. Fadnavis, the leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, had tested positive for the infection on Sunday and was in home isolation. The BJP MLA was in Latur to attend a public function on Saturday, and his RT-PCR test came positive the next day, forcing him to isolate himself at his official residence. “He was under medication and responding well. His RT-PCR test came negative today,” a party official said. Notably, the BJP has fielded three candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections to six seats in the state to be held on Friday. Members of the state Assembly form the electoral college for the Rajya Sabha polls.

    Goa CM urges people to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour amid rise in infections

    Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday said the state government is monitoring the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases and appealed to people to take precautions against the infection. Goa has seen a steady increase in COVID-19 cases over the last few days. The state has reported 77 new infections, taking the number of active cases to 376. Speaking to reporters here, Sawant said that the state government has been monitoring the rise in infections. People should take precautions by adopting Covid-appropriate behaviour. People should follow all protocols recommended to prevent the spread of the virus, he said. As on Wednesday, Goa's COVID-19 tally stood at 2,46,192, which includes 2,41,984 recoveries and 3,832 fatalities.

    2 firemen injured in firefighting operation in south Delhi

    Two firemen were injured while trying to control a fire that broke out in cluster buses in south Delhi’s Sunehri Pullah Depot, police said on Thursday. Firemen Suresh and Virender Singh sustained minor injuries during a firefighting operation near Dyal Singh College on Wednesday and were rushed to AIIMS Trauma centre, they said. Three buses, run by Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), had come for repair at a workshop and due to a short circuit they caught fire, an official said.

    Rajasthan: Missing minor girl found dead in forest in Kota

    Body of a missing 17-year-old girl was found in the forest of Jawahar Sagar Dam here, police said on Thursday. A NEET aspirant, the girl hailed from Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, and was staying in a hostel in Rajiv Gandhi area for the past one and a half month, they said. DSP and CO of Jawahar Nagar Ankit Jain told PTI, her body was found fully dressed. Prima facie, it seems that she died after being hit by a stone. The cause of death can only be cleared after the post-mortem examination, he said. According to the police, the deceased minor had left her room two days ago for coaching and did not return.

    MP: Tiger dies in Panna reserve

    A tiger was found dead in Madhya Pradesh's Panna reserve on Thursday, a forest official said. The tiger, named P-111, was nearly 13 years' old. Prima facie, it appears that the feline died due to age-related issues as there was no sign of any illegal activity near the spot where the carcass was found, he said. A forest patrolling team spotted the carcass on the Panna-Katni state highway, he said. It was the offspring of tigress T-1, the official said. The feline's samples were sent for virology and toxicology testing to ascertain the exact cause of the death, he said.

    NCP fields Khadse, Nimbalkar for Maha Legislative Council polls

    The NCP on Thursday named Eknath Khadse and Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar as its candidates for the upcoming polls to 10 seats of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Nimbalkar is the present chairman of the Upper House of the state Legislature. Khadse, the former state revenue minister, had resigned from the BJP in 2020 and joined the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, which shares power with the Shiv Sena and Congress in Maharashtra.     Election Commission to announce date of presidential poll today | READ

    The Election Commission will announce the schedule of the election to the office of the President of India on Thursday. The poll panel has convened a press conference at 3 pm to announce the schedule. The term of President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24 and an election for the next president has to be held before that day. The president is elected by the members of the electoral college consisting of elected members of both houses of Parliament, and elected members of the legislative assemblies of all states including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The nominated members of either Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha or legislative assemblies of the states are not eligible to be included in the electoral college and therefore, they are not entitled to participate in the election.

    Woman assaulted, molested in Mumbai local train; accused arrested

    A man allegedly assaulted and molested a woman in a moving local train in Mumbai and then snatched her bag and mobile phone, but was nabbed while running away at the Churchgate railway station, police said on Thursday. The incident took place on Monday evening, when the 20-year-old victim, a college student, was travelling from Prabhadevi to Churchgate in south Mumbai, they said.

    Sensex falls over 270 pts in early trade; Nifty slips below 16,300

    Equity benchmark Sensex fell over 277 points in opening trade on Thursday, tracking losses in index majors Asian Paints, TCS and HCL Tech amid a negative trend in global markets. The 30-share BSE gauge was trading 277.91 points or 0.51 per cent lower at 54,614.58 in early trade. Likewise, the Nifty declined 76.40 points or 0.47 per cent to 16,279.85. Asian Paints was the top loser in the Sensex pack, slipping 1.85 per cent, followed by HCL Tech, TCS, UltraTech Cement, Nestle India, HUL and Titan. On the other hand, Dr Reddy's, Reliance Industries and NTPC were the only gainers.

    Delhi: No respite from scorching heat in city

    Delhi witnessed a warm Thursday morning with the minimum temperature being recorded at 28 degrees Celsius even as the weather office predicted that heatwave conditions will persist during the day. The weather office said that the city residents are likely to get respite from the heatwave towards the weekend. “The city is likely to witness a heatwave on Thursday. The maximum temperature of the day is likely to hover around 44 degrees Celsius,” an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

    3 dead after multiple-vehicle highway crash in Arkansas

    Three people were killed Wednesday after at least a dozen vehicles collided in different spots along heavily-traveled Interstate 30 in southwestern Arkansas, state police officials said. The Arkansas Department of Transportation said the crashes happened just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near Midway, Arkansas, about 50 miles (80.47 kilometers) southwest of Little Rock. The highway was closed.

    House passes gun control bill after Buffalo, Uvalde attacks

    The House passed a wide-ranging gun control bill Wednesday in response to recent mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas, that would raise the age limit for purchasing a semi-automatic rifle and prohibit the sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 15 rounds. The legislation passed by a mostly party-line vote of 223-204. It has almost no chance of becoming law as the Senate pursues negotiations focused on improving mental health programs, bolstering school security and enhancing background checks. But the House bill does allow Democratic lawmakers a chance to frame for voters in November where they stand on policies that polls show are widely supported.

    Russia feels too strong to talk: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

    Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia is unwilling to negotiate an end to the war because it still feels strong. Zelensky told U.S. corporate leaders Wednesday that for Russia to join in negotiations “is simply not possible now because Russia can still feel its power.” Speaking via a video link through a translator, he added: “We need to weaken Russia and the world is supposed to do it.” Zelensky said Ukraine is doing its part on the battlefield and called for even tougher sanctions to weaken Russia economically. He told the business leaders: “We need to switch Russia off the global financial system completely.”

    One dead in Mumbai building collapse

    One person died after a three-storey building collapsed in suburban Bandra, a fire brigade official said on Thursday. The ground plus two storey structure in Shastrinagar locality collapsed shortly after midnight, the official said. A few persons are believed to be under the rubble, the official said, adding rescue operations are underway.

He said that the aim under Digital India mission in Jammu and Kashmir is to make services faceless, paperless and cashless. "This flagship programme is enabling technology empowered citizen-centric services, bringing government closer to the citizens and promoting citizen engagement," Sinha said. "Pertinently, this new future-ready facility with fully integrated cloud foundation offers combined computing, storage and networking as well as life cycle automation to the Jammu and Kashmir government," he added.

    Delhi Police registers FIR against several people over hate messages on social media

    The Delhi Police said on Wednesday that it has registered a case against some people who are allegedly spreading messages of hate, inciting various groups and creating situations which is detrimental for the maintenance of public tranquillity. Among those named in the FIR, registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit of the Special Cell, are Naveen Kumar Jindal, Shadab Chauhan, Saba Naqvi, Maulana Mufti Nadeem, Abdur Rehman and Gulzar Ansari, the police said. The FIR is against several individuals cutting across religions, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IFSO) KPS Malhotra said.

    DU, JNU, Jamia slip in QS World University Ranking; IIT Delhi up by 11 places

    Prominent universities like the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia have slipped in the coveted QS World University ranking, while the Indian Institute of Technology here has risen 11 places to 174th rank. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), global higher education analyst, on Thursday released the 19th edition of the world's most popular comparative data about university performance. The Delhi University which is the 10th best Indian university to figure in the 19th edition of the world's most consulted international university ranking, has slipped to the 521-530 category from 501-510 bracket earlier, it showed.

    IMF MD names Krishna Srinivasan to head Asia-Pacific department

    International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva Wednesday announced the appointment of Indian national Krishna Srinivasan as Director of the Asia and Pacific Department (APD) from June 22. According to an IMF announcement, Srinivasan will succeed Changyong Rhee whose retirement from the Fund was announced on March 23. "Krishna is a highly regarded member of our Fund family and has made many important and innovative contributions to our mission throughout his career at the Fund," Georgieva said.
