Nearly three months after joining the Trinamool Congress (TMC), former Goa legislator Lavoo Mamlatdar on Friday resigned from the party, accusing it of being communal and trying to create a divide between Hindus and Christians for votes ahead of the state Assembly polls.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday promised regular and cheap power supply for agricultural, domestic and industrial purposes if voted to power. "Had the proposed power plants in Etah and other districts been built, the people of Uttar Pradesh would not have been compelled to buy electricity at the highest rate in the country," his tweet in Hindi, targeting the BJP government, read. Extra vigil will be maintained in the bordering areas with Nepal in view of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh early next year and the administrative officials of the neighbouring country have assured full cooperation in this regard, a senior district official said here on Friday. A meeting of the India-Nepal Coordination Committee was held in Nepalganj city of neighbouring country during which the issue of peaceful conduct of UP elections was taken up on which the senior administrative officers present from the Nepalese side assured all possible cooperation, Bahraich District Magistrate Dinesh Chandra Singh said. There are many footpaths on the open border roads between the two countries, hence there is a need for special vigilance to check that anarchic elements do not use these routes for spreading unrest during the polls, he said.

Preparations are underway in Meerut to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 2 for laying the foundation stone of a sports university in Salwa village of Sardhana area. The Allahabad High Court on Thursday urged the central government to stop political rallies from being held in election-bound states amid rising cases of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19. A Bench of Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, while allowing the bail application of a petitioner in a case, said the number of patients infected with Omicron are increasing and there is a possibility of a third wave. The Punjab cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for coming out with a one-time settlement scheme for chronic defaulters of dues of principal cost of industrial plots located in the state. The industrial plots were developed by the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) or Punjab Infotech.

It is learnt that Congress' interim chief Sonia Gandhi sought the opinion of the MPs on the party's prospects in the 2022 Punjab Assembly polls. The meeting was held at the Congress chief's 10, Janpath residence.

Former MP Ranjit Singh Brahmpura rejoined the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the presence of party stalwart Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday. Brahmpura was the patron of the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led SAD (Sanyukt). He was against an alliance or a seat-sharing arrangement between the SAD (Sanyukt) and the BJP for the 2022 Punjab Assembly polls.
