The Saturday stampede that killed 12 people occurred “due to a scuffle between two groups of pilgrims”, the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board said in a statement, emphasizing only 35,000 pilgrims were allowed to proceed for the yatra against the normal capacity of 50,000 in view of the pandemic. Twelve people lost their lives and 16 others were injured in a stampede at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours during a heavy rush of devotees on New Year. A high-level inquiry panel headed by Principal Secretary (Home) Shaleen Kabra, with Divisional Commissioner Jammu Rajiv Langar and Additional Director General of Police Mukesh Singh as its members, has been set up by Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Manoj Sinha and asked to submit a report within a week.

    PDP leaders say stampede at Vaishno Devi shrine failure of J-K administration

    Terming the stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine a "man-made tragedy", some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders on Saturday blamed the Jammu and Kashmir administration for it and demanded a high-level probe into the incident in which at least 12 people were killed. They also asked how a large number of devotees were allowed to gather at the temple despite Covid protocols being in place.

    A joint statement issued by Jammu-based PDP leaders said, "The tragedy is the result of the failure on the part of the administration.
    It is not an accident but a man-made tragedy because those at the helm of the affairs are responsible for the first-ever stampede at the holy cave shrine.

    Seven pilgrims from UP, 3 from Delhi among 12 dead in stampede at Vaishno Devi shrine

    Seven pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh and three from Delhi were among the 12 people who died in a stampede at Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Saturday, officials said. The other two -- Mamta (38) and Dheeraj Kumar (26) -- belonged to Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, respectively, they said. Seven deceased Uttar Pradesh pilgrims have been identified as Shewata Singh (35), Dharamveer Singh (35), Vineet Kumar (38), Arun Pratab Singh (30), Monu Sharma (32), Mohinder Gour (26) and Narinder Kashap (40), according to the list of the dead persons released by authorities. The three deceased pilgrims from Delhi were identified as Akash Kumar (29), Sonu Panday (24) and Vinay Kumar (24). Sixteen people, who were injured in the incident, were admitted to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana hospital at Kakriyal. Six among them were discharged after necessary treatment.

    Cong for more compensation to Vaishno Devi shrine stampede victims

    Attributing the death of 12 pilgrims in a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine to the “grave negligence” of the administration, the Congress party on Saturday demanded a Rs 50 lakh compensation to families of those killed and Rs 10 lakh to the injured in the “tragic” incident. The J&K unit of Congress demanded the enhanced compensation over and above Rs 10 lakh announced for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to the injured. Senior party leaders including AICC Seva Dal chief Lal Ji Desai, J&K Congress president G A Mir and working president Raman Bhalla observed a two-minute silence to pay tributes to the deceased and pray for early recovery of the injured.

    The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage is going on smoothly with strict adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs), including COVID-19 guidelines, despite a stampede that claimed 12 lives and left over a dozen injured, a senior government official said on Saturday. Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Raghav Langer said the bodies of four victims of the stampede were dispatched to their native places, while the process to send the rest of the bodies was in progress.

    "The (Vaishno Devi) Yatra has resumed (after the stampede) and is going on smoothly," the divisional commissioner told reporters at Katra as the committee visited the town to begin its probe.

    Vaishno Devi stampede survivors blame 'mismanagement'

    A sudden rush of devotees at the Vaishno Devi shrine to mark the beginning of the New Year triggered the stampede that resulted in the death of 12 people, some of the survivors said, blaming "mismanagement" for the tragedy.

    The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, however, denied the charge, saying all necessary arrangements were made in view of the expected rush, while Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh blamed a minor altercation for the “unfortunate” incident.

    "Nothing but mismanagement was the cause for this tragic accident. They were aware about the possible rush but allowed the people in unhindered," a pilgrim from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh said while waiting outside a mortuary to identify a dead body.

    The man, who did not wish to be named, said this situation could have been avoided if the authorities concerned had managed the pilgrimage better.

    Minor altercation led to stampede situation: DGP Dilbag Singh

    A minor altercation among some young boys led to the stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in which 12 people "unfortunately" died, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Dilbag Singh said on Saturday. The incident was very unfortunate, and police and other officials responded to the situation in no time, Singh said. 

    Preliminary information from the scene suggests there was an altercation among some young boys, and within seconds, there was a stampede situation, Singh said.

    "Police and officials from the civil administration were quick to respond, and the order within the crowd was immediately restored, but by that time, the damage had been done," he said.

    "Immediately the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals," the police chief said, adding that 15 people were injured.

    Yogi Adityanath expresses grief over stampede incident

    Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the loss of lives in a stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan in Katra, Jammu, and Kashmir that took place early this morning, resulting in the death of at least 12 persons and injuring 13 others.

    "The mind is deeply pained by the unfortunate accident that took place in Mata Vaishno Devi Dham. May Maa Adishakti grant peace to the souls of those who died in the accident and speedy recovery to those injured in the accident. My condolences are with the bereaved families. Om Shanti," the Chief Minister tweeted.

    About Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine

    The cave shrine is situated at an altitude of 5,200 feet in the Reasi district and generally attracts close to a million devotees every year.

    The operations of the pilgrimage site are managed by the Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, which provides battery car and ropeway services to the pilgrims to reach the top of Trikuta hills for darshan.

    Rahul Gandhi offers condolences to families of victims

    Congress leader Rahul Gandhi mourned the deaths in a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

    Amit Shah speaks to J&K LG Manoj Sinha

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said he was deeply pained by the tragic accident at Mata Vaishno Devi temple and spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha who assured that the administration is providing treatment to the injured.
