Number of tigers in India stands at 3,167: PM Modi releases census data

PM Modi Karnataka visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the new statistics on the number of tigers in India at Mysuru on Sunday. Other than this, he also interacted with the frontline field staff and Self Help Groups involved in conservation activities. 

Tiger census data

India's tiger population rose by 200 in the past four years to reach 3,167 in 2022, the latest tiger census data released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Sunday revealed. According to the data, the tiger population was 1,411 in 2006, 1,706 in 2010, 2,226 in 2014, 2,967 in 2018 and 3,167 in 2022

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in the morning and took a safari ride. He also visited the Theppakadu Elephant camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and fed an elephant. 

The Prime Minister also interacted with Field Directors of tiger reserves that have scored highest in the recently concluded 5th cycle of Management Effectiveness Evaluation exercise.

International Big Cats Alliance launch:

Prime Minister launched the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA). In July, 2019 Prime Minister had called for an Alliance of Global Leaders to obliterate demand and firmly curb poaching and illegal Wildlife trade in Asia. Taking the message of the Prime Minister forward, the alliance is being launched. 

IBCA will focus on protection and conservation of seven major big cats of the world, viz. Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar and Cheetah, with membership of the range countries harbouring these species.

Project Tiger:

Prime Minister also inaugurated the programme ‘Commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger’. During the programme, he released the publications ‘Amrit kaal ka vision for tiger conservation’, summary report of 5th cycle of Management Effective Evaluation of Tiger Reserves, declared tiger numbers and released summary report of All India Tiger Estimation (5th cycle). A commemorative coin on the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger was also released by the Prime Minister.
