Army shifts 16 jawans after Chattergam killings, bandh in Kashmir valley

Srinagar: The Army has  'attached'  a column of 16 personnel including an officer belonging to 53 Rashtriya Rifles following the killings of two Kashmiri youths, Merajuddin Dar and Faisal Yousuf,  in Chattergam near Budgam on

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has promised a fair inquiry into the shooting incident, in which the four youths in a Maruti 800 car did not stop despite being flagged down by RR jawans, and tried to cross three mobile checkpoint barriers.

“Budgam incident in Kashmir Valley is highly regrettable, a fair enquiry will be held and a strict action will be taken against those found guilty,' said Jaitley.

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah spoke to Jaitley and sought “an immediate, transparent and time-bound probe” into the incident.

Omar, while speaking to Jaitely, said such incidents have no place in an otherwise “improving security environment and serve as a severe blow to  efforts of sustainable peace and reconciliation in the State.”

Omar  told the Defence Minister that these deaths have served to vitiate the poll atmosphere already strained by the post-flood reconstruction challenge.

The National Human Rights Commission today issued notices to Defence Ministry, local administration over killing of 2 youths in army firing in Budgam district of Kashmir on Monday. NHRC has sought a report from Defence Ministry within two weeks.

Meanwhile, condemning the attack, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley assured that a fair enquiry will be held and strict action will be taken against the guilty.
