Army shifts 16 jawans after Chattergam killings, bandh in Kashmir valley

Srinagar: The Army has  'attached'  a column of 16 personnel including an officer belonging to 53 Rashtriya Rifles following the killings of two Kashmiri youths, Merajuddin Dar and Faisal Yousuf,  in Chattergam near Budgam on

There was a shutdown in the entire Kashmir Valley today following a general strike call by separatist groups to protest the killings.

"Restrictions have been imposed in five police station areas of old city as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order," a police spokesman said.

Hurriyat Conference factions headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had called for a strike to protest the killing of two youths.

Meanwhile, an army official said that, "Some vested interests are spreading rumours that the third person injured during Chattergam incident has succumbed. It is clarified that both are stable and doing fine," Colonel GS (IW) of Army's 15 Corps Col Brijesh Pandey said.

The two youths - Faisal Yusuf Bhat and Mehrajuddin Dar - were killed, while two others -Shaker Bhat and Zahid Naqash - were injured Monday evening when soldiers of the 53 Rashtriya Rifles opened fire at the car in which they were travelling in Chattergam village, 20 km from Srinagar.

The youths were from Nowgam area of Srinagar district.

The army said the car driver did not stop at a mobile vehicle check post (MVCP) when he was signalled to do so.

"Based on specific intelligence reports about the movement of terrorists in a white Maruti 800 car on Nov 3 along the Nowgam-Pulwama road, three MVCPs were established along the road.
