The cafe is inside an ice stupa which was basically constructed for a competition of building the highest ice stupa. This was made by three locals named, Sonam Chosdup, Nawang Phunstog, and Jigmet Tundup. The purpose of the ice stupa is to conserve the winter water in the form of an artificial glacier. The competition is started by Rolex Awardee Sonam Wangchuk as part of the Ice Stupa Project of Ladakh.

Speaking to The Better India, Sonam Chosdup revealed, “We figured that the corridor of ice leading up the dome could be used as a café, provided we extend it a bit and put chairs there. After a few tweaks, we opened the café in the first week of February, serving ginger lemon tea, masala tea, coffee, local butter tea and even Maggi,” he says.
