November 14 is celebrated as Children's Day across India. The day marks the birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Besides his political skills, Pandit Nehru is remembered for his affection for children and is fondly called Chacha Nehru. To commemorate his birthday, various cultural programmes are held across the schools. Pandit Nehru said, ''children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow.'' He not only encouraged primary education in India but also established several higher educational institutions including AIIMS, IIT and IIM. Before Pandit Nehru's death , India used to celebrate Children's Day on November 20, which is observed as Universal Children’s Day by The United Nations.
