According to mythology, Kansane sent a serpent named Kaliya to kill Lord Krishna while he was playing with his friends. He first troubled the villagers. People were shocked. One day when Lord Krishna was playing his ball fell into the river. When they came down to the river to bring him, Kaliya attacked them.

Seeing it, Kaliya's life came upon her. Kalia apologized to Lord Krishna and promised never to harm the villagers. The victory of Balakrishna over Kaliya Nag is celebrated as Nag Panchami.
