Calcutta High Court orders NIA investigation into violence in Howrah's Shibpur during Ram Navami celebrations

Several shops were ransacked during the violence while a number of cars, including a few police vehicles, were set on fire in Howrah's Shibpur and Kazipara area.

Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered an NIA investigation into violence in Howrah's Shibpur during Ram Navami celebrations last month. Clashes and instances of fire-bombing were reported from towns in the industrial belt of Hooghly and Howrah districts related to Ram Navami processions over few days. The unfolding of events also saw Bengal’s Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose rushing from Darjeeling to visit violence-hit areas.

Taking over investigations into the clashes, the CID sleuths also conducted their investigation including collecting samples and speaking to local people as well as police personnel who were deployed there during the clash.

Several shops were ransacked during the violence while a number of cars, including a few police vehicles, were set on fire in Howrah's Shibpur and Kazipara area. Following the clashes Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel conducted route marches

The apex child rights body NCPCR had also issued a notice to the Howrah Police Commissioner over the use of children for pelting stones during violence that erupted in West Bengal on Ram Navami. The violence also lead to the arrest of 45 people.
