Meet Kelly Gallagher: The first British paralympian to win a gold medal

New Delhi: Visually-impaired skier Kelly Gallagher and guide Charlotte Evans earned Great Britain their first ever gold medal at the Winter Paralympics.The pair took the super-G title in one minute, 28.72 seconds as they bounced back from their downhill disappointment in emphatic fashion.It is the first gold medal won by a British team in skiing at either the Winter Olympic or Paralympic Games. Gallagher is 28 and from Bangor in County Down, Northern Ireland. She competes in five skiing events - the Visually impaired super combined, slalom, giant slalom, Super-G and downhill. Sochi is her second Winter Paralympics, having finished in fourth position in the Giant Slalom at the 2010 Vancouver Games.Gallagher has oculocutaneous albinism, an inherited condition that affects the pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. She has had poor eyesight from birth and was registered blind as a child - though she does have partial sight. She started skiing at the age of 17 and made her international debut just four years later at the Winter Games in New Zealand in 2009. Gallagher teamed up with Evans for the first time in late 2010 and, since then, the pair have won silver and bronze medals in the 2011 and 2013 World Championships. Oculocutaneous albinism is a condition that affects an estimated one in 20,000 people worldwide from birth. It is an inherited condition that affects the pigmentation of skin, hair and eyes. People with the condition usually have vision problems such a reduced sharpness, increased sensitivity to light (photophobia) and involuntary eye movements (nystagmus).
