Johannesburg, Nov 5: Olympic swimming champion Chad le Clos won South Africa's sports star of the year award on Sunday, collecting one million rand ($114,000) and a new car.



Fittingly wearing a gold bow tie at the ceremony, the 20-year-old Le Clos was recognized for his gold and silver medals at the London Games, where he beat Michael Phelps to the 400 meters butterfly title.

Caster Semenya won sportswoman of the year after her silver in the 800 meters in London.

Oscar Pistorius won the sportsman of the year with a disability for making history as the first amputee runner to compete at the Olympics. Swimmer Natalie du Toit was sportswoman of the year with a disability.

South Africa's men's lightweight four rowing crew, the Olympic champions, was team of the year.
