10 Olympics moments that shook the world

New Delhi: The Olympic Games is a celebration of athleticism, sporting prowess and goodwill but there have been a number of incidents over the years that have gone beyond mere sport. From politics and ideology

Mary Decker / Zola Budd - Los Angeles 1984

Zola Budd was already a controversial figure before the 1984 Games - a white South African who had chosen, and had been accepted, to compete for Great Britain at a time when South Africa was banned from international competition due to its apartheid regime.

Her choice to run barefoot was also a point of contention but her notoriety rocketed when, during the final of the 3000m, she cut across American favourite Mary Decker, colliding with her and sending her crashing to the ground.

As Decker lay injured, Budd went on to finish the race senventh. Debate has raged ever since as to whether or not Budd's overtake move was illegal.
