NAPIER, New Zealand: The second one-day cricket international between New Zealand and the West Indies was abandoned because of rain Sunday without a ball being bowled.

Heavy rain was falling at McLean Park at the scheduled local start time of 2pm (0100 GMT) and, though it abated after about three hours, the umpires decided the outfield could not be made fit for play.

The West Indies lead the five-match series 1-0 after winning the first match at Eden Park on Thursday by two wickets; replying with 157-8 to New Zealand's 156.

The third match is in the South Island resort of Queenstown on Wednesday.
