IND vs SA 1st Test Highlights: South Africa win by an innings and 32 runs as India bowled out for 131 on Day 3

South Africa proved to be too strong on a tricky Centurion surface as the hosts won by an innings and 32 runs in just three days as India were handed one of their worst overseas losses in the last few years. Apart from KL Rahul in the first innings, Virat Kohli in the second with the bat and Jasprit Bumrah with the ball, none of the players came up with a performance of note. All the bowlers except Bumrah lacked penetration and the batters just didn't apply themselves in either of the innings. After conceding a 163-run lead, it seemed like the batters were waiting for the misery to get over. Apart from Kohli, whoever was coming in to bat was just doing it to get out and go back. India now can't win the series but have the opportunity to level it at Newlands.

    KL Rahul on the contest

KL Rahul feels the contest is balanced.

Quite balanced. We have to come out here today and bowl in the right areas. Still a bit of assistance from the pitch. We need to get Dean out early and get the rest after. It is building up to be a pretty exciting Test match. (On batting) It was a challenging wicket, it was under covers for a couple of days. The pitch was a bit damp and the SA bowlers took advantage of it. Never easy touring South Africa and the dampness of the wicket made it harder. When I walked out, it was about trying to build a partnership and then it was quite clear I had to take my chances. The bowlers hung in there, Shardul played really well and I could score freely. (On wicketkeeping in Tests) It is a lot harder on the body, I haven't done it too many times in Test matches. Just 2 first class games and a few tour games. I try to do it to the best of my abilities because this is the role given to me for these two Test matches.

    Day 3 pitch

Shaun Pollock on air says that this pitch is expected to speed up more today. The sun is shining bright as the clouds are away from the venue. "The pitch played nicely yesterday, and the wicket has sped up a touch. The sunshine will be nice, it has been difficult to get the surface nice and dry. There are a few divots that have been created, there are a few soft patches which would pose a challenge to the batters. You have to mix up lengths on this surface, don’t allow the batsmen to get into a groove. The pitch will quicken and the variable bounce will increase," Shaun Pollock says in his pitch report

    What's going at SuperSport Park?

The Indian players are out on the ground and are warming up. The South African players are out on the field too and we are little away from action now

  • 1:02 PM (IST) Posted by Varun Malik

    How much can India afford?

India are already 11 runs down now and still have to take 5 more wickets. A lead of over 75 can hurt India and they would not want it to go any way beyond 100. Quick wickets are the need of the hour for the visitors.

  • 12:58 PM (IST) Posted by Varun Malik

    Left handers' love with India

The left-handers have enjoyed playing against India in recent times. In list of batters with best average vs IND outside Asia, four of the top five are left-handers which also includes Elgar.

  • 12:49 PM (IST) Posted by Varun Malik

    Dean Elgar's day

It was Dean Elgar's day in Centurion. He has a special skill of not falling for deliveries that lure a batsman. He played and missed so many balls yesterday but did not follow them so he does not get an edge. Can India see his back early today?

  • 12:39 PM (IST) Posted by Varun Malik

    How was Day 2?

A not so easy one for India, honestly. They had moments of joy but the day belonged to the hosts eventually. KL Rahul scored a sensational hundred but was countered by another brilliant one from Dean Elgar. The Indians kept things quite in the first session, however, the second one was something they would think that they could change. The visitors leaked 145 runs in 33 overs and picked up only two wickets.

On the back of an unbeaten hundred from Dean Elgar, South Africa are leading India by 11 runs and have 5 wickets in hand. A tough day for the Indian bowlers as they could not see the back of Elgar on Day 2. He is unbeaten on 140 and is the main man, who India would be wanting to remove as early as it can.
