Former England captain Michael Vaughan joined sports stars, celebrities and cricket fans in a touching tribute to Phillip Hughes.

Vaughan, now a broadcaster and cricket columnist, was among hundreds of people across the world to place a bat and cricket cap by their front door as a mark of respect after the 25-year-old Australian batsman died on Thursday.

Cricket fan and TV personality Piers Morgan, former Australia Test stars Dean Jones and Adam Gilchrist and England batsman Jonathan Trott and former England spinner Graeme Swann joined in the Twitter tribute #putoutyourbats.

Sydney resident Paul Taylor has sparked a trend on social media, saluting the batsman by perching a cricket bat outside his front door and uploading an image to Twitter with the accompanying hashtag #putoutyourbats
