Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Steven Smith offered the Pakistan bowlers some dogged resistance as Australia slowly slipped toward a big defeat on the fifth and final day of the second test Monday.

Smith was to 97 not out at lunch after facing 202 balls as Australia reached 238-5, still trailing Pakistan by 364.

Brad Haddin was 13 not out after after Pakistan claimed one wicket in the first session in Mitchell Marsh -- Australia's top-scorer in the first innings.

Australia is chasing a target of 603 runs - a run chase that has never been achieved in the history of test cricket - with two sessions to be played.

Marsh (47) departed after putting together a partnership of 107 runs with Smith. The pair defied the Pakistani bowlers for nearly 90 minutes before Marsh unnecessarily turned a Mohammad Hafeez delivery that was going down the leg side into the hands of Asad Shafiq at leg slip.
