India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted good luck wish to Virat Kohli and his men ahead of the side's first game of World Cup 2019.

The Indian team is currently taking on South Africa at Rose Bowl in Southampton.

PM Modi tweeted, "As #TeamIndia begins it’s #CWC19 journey today, best wishes to the entire Team. May this tournament witness good cricket and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship. Khel bhi jeeto, aur dil bhi."

The Indian team is seen as one of the major contenders for the World Cup, alongside host nation England and Australia. Virat Kohli, who has already lifted the World Cup in 2011, will aim for his first ICC trophy as the captain of the side.

Earlier, South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first against India. The Proteas made a poor start to the tournament, losing their first two games. Skipper Faf du Plessis faced a further setback last night after it was confirmed that speedster Dale Steyn will not feature in the World Cup due to injury.

India, meanwhile, received a boost with the return to fitness for Kedar Jadhav, who has been included in the playing XI against South Africa.
