At a glance: Vinod Khanna, from Bollywood superstar to Union Minister

New Delhi: Bollywood actor Vinod Khanna has dedicated 45 years of life to silver screen. After mastering the art of entertaining people with his charm Vinod Khanna entered the political arena. .After acting in 141 films starting from 1968, Khanna gained stardom and was considered to be one of the most handsome Bollywood stars of his time. Although he made his debut in Bollywood with Sunil Dutt's Mann Ka Meet in 1968, Khanna got his first solo lead role in the movie Hum Tum Aur Woh in 1971.After working in numerous multi- and solo starrer movies, Khanna quit the industry as soon as he touched the pinnacle of his career. In 1980, Khanna became an Osho follower which put a halt to his acting career. This continued for five long years.1987 saw his comeback into the industry with his movie Insaf in which he was starred opposite to one of most the successful actresses of her time, Dimple Kapadia.For 10 years Khanna stayed in the industry working on different projects which included his production venture to launch his son Akhshaye Khanna in Himalaya Putra. In 1997, Vinod Khanna ventured out and entered mainstream politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.In the Lok Sabha polls the next year, he won from Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab. Once again, in 1999, he won from the same constituency. After three years, in 2002, Khanna was given the portfolio of the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism. He went onto become the Minister of state for External Affairs six months later. In 2004, Khanna once again won from Gurdaspur constituency.Khanna's personal life has been a turbulent one. After he became an Osho disciple for five years he was unable to pay enough time to his family. Married to Geetanjali with two sons, Akshaye and Rahul, Vinod left his family and started spending time cleaning dishes and gardening. His absence from his house led to a divorce between him and Geetanjali.In 1990, Khanna re-married.
