2. Harish Rawat replaces Vijay Bahuguna as the Chief Minister of Uttrakhand

Vijay Bahuguna resigned as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on 31st January under the pressure of his party. The Congress wanted him to accept responsibility for the shoddy rehabilitation work carried out by his government after last year's flash floods in which nearly a thousand people died, and another 4000 reported missing.

He was replaced by Harish Rawat, who enjoyed the backing of a majority of the Congress lawmakers in the state.

Harish Rawat was sworn-in as the eighth Chief Minister of Uttarakhand in a ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan on 1st February, 2014.
