The record for a maximum victory margin in the Lok Sabha polls was earlier held by Anil Basu of Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 2004 to 2014. He had who won by 5,92,502 votes from Arambagh in West Bengal during the 2004 general elections.

He was elected for the first time to the eighth Lok Sabha in 1984 from Arambagh constituency in West Bengal. He was re-elected to the Lower House of the Parliament in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004 from the same constituency.
