Mumbai: Former Maharashtra home minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader RR Patil, who was suffering from oral cancer, passed away in Mumbai on Monday. 57-year-old Patil breathed his last at the Lilavati Hospital.

For the past few days, Patil's condition was critical and he was put on life support system in the suburban hospital.

Sources said that Patil suffered from multiple organ failure.

Previously, he was undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital for cancer.

A hospital source confirmed that he has been undergoing regular chemotherapy sessions for treating it.
In December, Patil also suffered from a cardiac arrest and underwent angiography at city-based Bombay Hospital.

Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, Sunil Tatkare and Chhagan Bhujbal were among party leaders who had visited the hospital to inquire about Patil's health.

Patil was a prominent NCP leader from Sangli in western Maharashtra.
