Know 21 new ministers of Narendra Modi cabinet

New Delhi: Twenty-one new faces were inducted in the Narendra Modi government's first cabinet expansion Sunday.Four new cabinet ministers and 17 ministers of state, three with independent charge, took oath at the Durbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan here Sunday afternoon.The first cabinet expansion witnessed high drama as the Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai who was tipped to join the union cabinet, returned from the union cabinet after he was asked to do so by the party chief Uddhav Thackeray.Besides Modi, those who attended the swearing-in ceremony included Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, PM Narendra Modi, senior BJP leader L.K. Advani and BJP president Amit Shah.Here we are compiling the profiles of the newly inducted ministers of Narendra Modi cabinet:Manohar Parrikar (Cabinet minister):Manohar Parrikar is the former Goa CM. He is the First IIT graduate in India to become CM; He has done his B. Tech in Metallurgy from IIT-Mumbai. Joined RSS when he was young, became Sanghachalak of a local RSS unit at the age of 26.He became leader of opposition in Goa in 1995.Parrikar is considered the main architect behind making BJP the dominant party in Goa, decimating the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.His first term as CM was from 2000 till 2002. He was re-elected and became CM again from 2002 to 2007. BJP lost 2007 Goa elections, but again made a comeback in 2012. Parrikar again became CM from March 2012 till Saturday.He was also considered for BJP president post before Nitin Gadkari was appointed.He is known for his honesty. He is famous for riding on scooter aroung Panaji without the trappings of power.Suresh Prabhu (Cabinet minister):The man who was picked up by the then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to plan the nationwide interlinking of rivers.He comes as cabinet minister at the centre for the second time. A chartered accountant by profession, Suresh Prabhu, age 61, has a clean and pro-active image.He was elected to Lok Sabha four times. In Vajpayee govt, he was first made Industry Minister, then given the Environment portfolio, and then Heavy Industry and Public enterprises. He was made chairman of the task force for interlinking of rivers, but its work fell midway after the UPA came to power in 2004.Suresh Prabhu has been appointed sherpa (pointsperson) by PM Narendra Modi for the G-20 summit in Brishbane going to be held on Nov 15-16. He will be going there with the PM.Currently, he is chairman of Council on energy, environment and water, and is also a member of Global Advisory Council of World Economic Forum.Suresh Prabhu was a Shiv Sena leader, but of late, his relations with his party have been strained.Jagat Prakash Nadda (Cabinet minister):Known as an organisation man, he always tries to keep a low profile. But he is backed by the RSS. Joined JP movement during emergency. Was secretary, ABVP in Patna University. Became forest and environment minister in BJP govt in HP, was also Law Minister.As BJP general secretary, Nadda is in-charge of Rajasthan and Maharashtra.Nadda is said to be close to PM Narendra Modi, since the days when Modi was general secretary-in-charge of HP. Both used to stay in the outhouse of BJP HQ in Delhi.He was elected MLA thrice in HP. As Forest Minister, he set up Eco-Battalions to preserve environment in Himachal forests. As Law Minister, he introduced vice-conferencing from district jails to courts. Also served as Health Minister in HP till 2003. Elected to Rajya Sabha in May 2012. He also served as president of Himachal Pradesh Olympic Association.Chaudhary Birendra Singh (Cabinet minister):Jat community leader Birender Singh, who has been termed as a political "tragedy king" for failing to make it to be Haryana's chief minister or a union minister, has finally made it to the union cabinet. He quit the Congress, with which he was actively involved for 42 years, to join the BJP August this year. He is the third union minister from Haryana in the Modi government.The jat stalwart from Haryana, who was denied his due place by Congress in deference to Bhupinder Singh Hooda, took his revenge, by leaving Congress and joined BJP before the elections.Birendra Singh is the grandson of the legendary Jat leader Sir Chhotu Ram.Birendra Singh, age 64, was associated with the Congress for over 42 years. He won five times to the Haryana assembly from Uchana constituency. He became minister in Haryana three times.He was also elected to Parliament twice. He defeated Om Prakash Chautala from Hisar by a huge margin in 1984, the year in which Rajiv Gandhi's Congress won 400 seats in Lok Sabha. He was elected Rajya Sabha member from Haryana in 2010, but he resigned his seat in August this year, after ending his 42-year-long association with Congress. His wife Premlata won on BJP ticket in Haryana polls defeating Dushyant Chautala from Uncha Kalan seat.Bandaru Dattatreya- MoS (Independent charge)Age 67, Bandaru Dattatreya is president of BJP Telangana unit. He was elected four times to Lok Sabha from Secunderabad seat.He is succeeded as president by Kishan Reddy. He has been elected as Member of Parliament for 10th, 12th, 13th lok sabha (1991-2004) from Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency in India and was a Union Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government.He is presently BJP vice-president. He joined RSS as pracharak before coming to BJP. He was MoS Urban Development and later MoS Railways in Vajpayee govt. He has been elected this time to LS from Secunderabad.Rajiv Pratap Rudy- MoS (Independent charge) Rajiv Pratap Rudy is a go-getter, a pilot by profession. Age 52, he is the BJP MP from Saran, Bihar, the man who defeated Lalu Prasad's wife Rabri Devi by a slender margin of 4,000 votes.Born in Chapra, Rudy was a lecturer before he joined BJP. He was first elected MLA in Bihar in 1990. He was later elected to Lok Sabha in 1996, and re-elected in 1999. He worked as MoS Commerce and Industry and later made Civil Aviation Minister with independent charge in Vajpayee govt.He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2010. Rudy is BJP general secretary and is incharge of states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.Dr Mahesh Sharma- MoS (Independent charge) A known medical practitioner, Dr Mahesh Sharma set up the famous Kailash Hospital in Noida 25 years ago. After joining BJP, he was given the ticket to contest Lok Sabha polls from Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida).Age 55, Dr Sharma is the national convenor of BJP Media Cell.Mahesh sharma defeated SP rival Narendra Bhatti in Noida by a huge margin of 2,80,000 votes. He is a first-time MP in Lok SabhaMukhtar Abbas Naqvi- MoSJoined politics in his student days, Naqvi is the Muslim face of BJP, apart from Shah Nawaz Hussain. Age 57, he went to jail during emergency, while studying in Allahabd university. Was vice-president of the then Janata Party youth wing Yuva Janata. Became national vice-president of BJP youth wing from 1992 to 1997. Was made national secretary of BJP in 2000 and then national vice-president from 2006.Naqvi won his first Lok Sabha election in 1998 from Rampur. Was appointed MoS Information and Broadcasting in Vajpayee govt. This is the second time he is joining the govt at the centre.He was elected Rajya Sabha member in 2002. Was again elected Rajya Sabha member in 2010. He lost the Lok Sabha elections from Rampur.Babul Supriyo- MoSThis Bollywood and Bengali playback singer never dreamt that he would one day win a Lok Sabha election on debut and become a minister at the Centre, that too, the sole representative from West Bengal.His full name is Babul Supriyo Baral.Babul Supriyo confounded his critics when he won the Lok Sabha election on BJP ticket from Asansol by a margin of 70,000 votes, defeating Trinamool's fiery labour union leader Dola Sen.Age 44, he joined BJP this year and was immediately fielded in LS polls.He has done playback songs for Bollywood films like Gaddar, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi, Doli Saja Ke rakhna, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Albela, Dil Vil Pyar Var, Kya Yahi Pyaar Hai, Fanaa, Laaga Chunri Me Daag, Tera Jadoo chal gayaa, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Ye Tera Ghar Ye Mera Ghar, and TV serial Kasauti Zindagi Kay.Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti- MoSSadhvi Niranjan Jyoti belongs to the backward caste of UP. She was first elected MLA from Hamir in UP two years ago. This year, she won the Lok Sabha polls from Fatehpur. Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti is a politician from Bhartiya Janata Party. She won Hamirpur seat in Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 2012She contested and won from Fatehpur Seat, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in Indian general election in 2014.A fiery speaker, she managed to completely polarize Nishad and Thakur votes in her favour in the Lok Sabha elections. She has a mass following and has her ashram in Kanpur dehat.Ram Kripal Yadav- MoSA one-time close confidante of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, Ram Kripal Yadav joined BJP just before the LS elections, when he was denied a ticket, and the Patliputra ticket was given to Lalu's daughter Misa Bharati.Ram Kripal Yadav gave a strong fight and defeated Lalu's daughter from Patliputra by 40,000 votes.Ram Kripal Yadav was elected deputy mayor of Patna municipal corporation in 1985. He became member of Bihar legislative council in 1992. He was elected on RJD ticket to Lok Sabha in 1993 in a byelection, and was again elected in 996 and 2004. In 2009, he vacated this seat for Lalu Prasad, and was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2010.Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore- MoS When Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won the Silver Medal for India in shooting in the 2004 Athens Olympics, he never thought in his dreams that he would one day contest elections in Rajasthan and become a minister at the Centre.A Colonel in the Army, Rathore hails from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. He joined BJP in September 2013, after taking voluntary retirement from the Army and won the Lok Sabha elections from Jaipur Rural.Winner of Arjuna Award, and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (India's highest sporting honour), the Ati Vishist Seva Medal from the Army, and also recepient of Padma Shri. Also got Sikh Regiment Gold Medal, the Sword of Honour for Best Cadet at Indian Military Academy. Was India's flag bearer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2006 Commonwealth games in Melbourne.Rathore also set in the India TV jury to select Salaam India Bravery award winners.Sanwar Lal Jat- MoSOne of the prominent Jat faces from Rajasthan, Sanwar Lal Jat defeated Rajasthan Congress president Sachin Pilot from Ajmer in the Lok Sabha elections.Age 59, Sanwarlal Jat was a professor before joining politics. He served as minister in Rajasthan looking after portfolios or irrigation, Indira Gandhi Canal Project.He has done his PhD after doing M.Com. He was recently in controversy when the Congress led by Sachin Pilot went to President to complain that Sanwarlal Jat had not resigned as minister in Rajasthan, when he took oath as Lok Sabha MP. The Congress charge was that he had resigned as MLA after taking oath as MP, but continued to be a cabinet minister till July.Giriraj Singh- MoSGiriraj Singh is a vocal leader from Bihar's Bhumihar community, and is always in the thick of controversies because of his "communal" remarks. Age 62, Giriraj Singh served as Cooperative Minister and then Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister in Bihar in Nitish Kumar govt. Giriraj Singh had evoked derision when he commented during Lok Sabha elections that those opposed to Modi should go to Pakistan, as they have no place in India.Hailing from Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Giriraj Singh was elected from Nawada Lok Sabha seat this time.Giriraj Singh was involved in another controversy, when, according to him, Rs 50,000 was stolen from his flat in Patna, but the police recovered a huge cash of Rs 1.14 crore. Giriraj then told police that the money belonged to his cousin Rakesh Singh who was a businessman.Hansraj Ahir- MoSHansraj Ahir is the BJP MP from Chandrapur, Maharashtra, who doggedly investigated the Coalgate scam. It was he who as member of the Parliament Standing Committee on coal asked the CVC and CAG to probe coal contracts being given by the UPA government at throwaway prices.Ahir wrote a record 13 letters to the then PM Manmohan Singh saying coal blocks were being allotted at throwaway prices.He was been elected to Lok Sabha four times. He was first elected to Lok Sabha in 1996, 2004, 2009 and 2014.Age 60, Hansraj Ahir was born in Nanded. His political career began when he was elected to Maharashtra legislative council in 1994.Jayant Sinha- MoSAged 51, Son of Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, Jayant Sinha became a Minister at the centre on his debut as Lok Sabha MP from Hazaribagh, his father's constituency.An MBA from Harvard, he also done his B.Tech from IIT-Delhi, M.Sc. from Pennsylvania University.His speech on the Union Budget in Lok Sabha came to the notice of PM Narendra Modi, who then decided to induct him.Jayant Sinha is presently member, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance.During the 2014 in the national election campaign, Sinha worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help frame the national economic policy, including organizing and hosting an international business leaders' forum with Modi in February 2014.Vijay Sampla- MoSAge 53, Vijay Sampla is the BJP MP from Hoshiarpur. He belongs to schedule caste, and has also worked as chairman of Punjab forest development corporation and chairman, Punjab Khadi and Village Industry Board.He also heads the Anusuchit Jati Aarakshan Bachao Manch in Punjab.Ramshankar Katheria- MoSWon the Lok Sabha seat from Agra twice in 2009 and 2014. He defeated his BSP rival this time by a margin of more than 3 lakh votes.Education MA PhD. Age 50 years. Belongs to Scheduled Caste. Studied in Kanpur University.Y S Chowdhary (TDP)- MoS TDP MP Y S Chowdhary is also known as Sumana Choudhary. Because is the founder of Sujana Group of Companies, that makes electric fans and home appliances.He also from Ranga Reddy district of Telangana, spent his childhood years in Vijayawada and Hyderabad.He worked as a Superintendent Engineer in Andhra Pradesh Irrgation and Power department, after earning his degree in Mechanical engineering in 1984. He later got his M.Tech in Machine Tool engineering.He was elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha in 2010. He was among those TDP MPs who staged protest in Rajya Sabha, and tried to oppose, when the Telangana Bill was being passed during UPA government.Mohan Bhai Kundaiyera- MoSBorn in Nichi Mandal village of Rajkot district's Morbi taluka on 6 September, 1951, Shri Mohanlal Kalyanji Kundaria made his career in agriculture and commerce after passing S.S.C.He served as the President of Morbi diamond association, Telibiya sahkari mandali(of his village), and also served on various positions in Morbi Nagarpalika. He has been elected to Gujarat assembly for three times. He was the minister of state for Rural development in Keshubhai Patel ministry. He has hobby of reading and executing the latest technologies useful for agriculture. He has visited Belgium, America, U.K, Russia and China.Kundaria belongs to influential Patel community of Saurashtra.Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary- MoSBorn in village Jagana (in Banaskantha district, Gujarat), he has received M Com degree from Mumbai University. Prior to joining politics, Chaudhary was an Agriculturist and a Businessperson.Haribhai Chaudhary joined Bharatiya Janata Party in late 1980s and held various party posts. He has been elected three terms as Member of Parliament from the Banaskantha constituency.
