Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy today said that ‘triple talaq’ cannot be accepted in Indian society  because it is totally ‘immoral’.

Swamy further said that it was totally wrong to say that the freedom of religion, as enshrined in the Constitution, is absolute.

“Under Article 25 of the Constitution, freedom of religion is subject to reasonable restrictions with regard to morality, public order and health,” Swamy said.

The BJP MP pointed out that the practice of ‘triple talaq’ only enforces the belief that men and women are unequal which is unacceptable.

"Can women be treated like this? That any man can say ‘triple talaq’ three times and it will be allowed. It is totally an immoral thing. It only means that men and women are not equal, which we cannot accept," he added.

The Supreme Court will today hear various petitions on the Constitutional legitimacy of ‘triple talaq’ and polygamy in the Muslim community.
