Advising Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati against resigning from the Rajya Sabha, former Uttar Pradesh minister and senior SP leader Azam Khan today asked her to start planning for 2019 general elections.

Azam Khan also said that given her seniority and stature, Mayawati should be given the chance to speak in the upper house of the Parliament.

"She must be given chance to speak in the Rajya Sabha as she is a senior leader and served as a four times chief minister in Uttar Pradesh. There is no need to resign. In fact, she  must plan things to fight for 2019 elections," Azam Khan said.

Earlier in the day, Mayawati threatened to resign from the Rajya Sabha after she was not allowed to speak over the alleged atrocities being committed against the weaker sections of the society.

"When I tried to speak about the weaker sections in the Rajya Sabha today, I was not allowed to speak. Why? It's a shame. If I am not allowed to speak on Dalits being targeted, then I will resign from the Rajya Sabha," Mayawati said.
