The Congress Party has expelled one of its top leaders in Kerala, A.P. Abdullakutty on Monday for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"It is a sad news. I expected it from Mullappally Ramachandran (KPCC President). I'm not an opportunist. I am a person who took a stand on developmental issues," he told reporters.

Earlier, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee gave Abdullakutty 5 days to explain his remarks. His failure to furnish a response led to the party’s decision to oust him.

Abullakutty’s Facebook post praising Modi’s victory came right after the Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
