After opting to bowl first, England made early inroads to put India in trouble. David Willey and Chris Woakes picked up the first three wickets to fall including that of Virat Kohli for a duck to leave India reeling at 40/3 in the 12th over of the innings. It finally looked like England - the world champions - were playing as they fielded brilliantly as well to show their high spirits.

However, yet again, the India skipper Rohit Sharma stood strong in tough times for the team. He stitched a crucial partnership with KL Rahul to resurrect India's innings before getting out in the 37th over. The captain scored 87 runs off 104 deliveries with 10 fours and three sixes to his name carrying his excellent form in the World Cup.

The much-needed finishing kick was provided to team India by Suryakumar Yadav. He made sure to stay in the middle till the end but got out in the 47th over of the innings. Nevertheless, Surya scored a vital 49 off 47 balls with 4 fours and a six to his name. Thanks to his efforts, India managed to post a fighting total of 229 runs in their 50 overs for the loss of nine wickets.

England would've backed themselves to chase down 230 runs. But India's pacer Jasprit Bumrah derailed their chase upfront with wickets of Dawid Malan and Joe Root off consecutive deliveries in the 5th over. England never recovered from these early blows.

After Bumrah's first spell, Mohammed Shami took over to dismantle the defending champions completely. He ended with magical figures of 4/22 in seven overs with two maidens as well. He picked up the wickets of Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid. England folded for just 129 runs in the 35th over of the innings to get knocked out of World Cup 2023
