Thousands come out in Ireland to protest death of pregnant Indian woman

Dublin, Nov 16: Thousands of protesters came out on Wednesday outside Ireland's parliament  to demand easing of tough abortion rules after  pregnant Indian woman Savita  died after being repeatedly denied abortion in an Irish hospital.

The Indian government has expressed serious concern over Savita's death and has conveyed its displeasure to the Irish government.

Despite a dramatic waning of the influence of the Catholic Church, which dominated politics in the country until the 1980s, successive governments have been loathe to legislate on an issue they fear could alienate conservative voters.
