Colombo: Britain's Prince Charles hosted his first dinner for the Commonwealth heads of government in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, on Friday.

Charles is representing his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who is not attending the summit for the first time since 1973.

This year's summit has been overshadowed by Sri Lanka's human rights record during the country's long-running civil war with Tamil Tiger separatists.

Charles made no mention of the allegations, either at the dinner or during his opening speech.

While the leaders of Canada, India and Mauritius have boycotted the summit, the Commonwealth organisation and other leaders have defended the meeting as a way to engage Sri Lanka on the issues.
