Islamabad, Oct 30: A caretaker government would take over in Pakistan in March next year ahead of the parliamentary elections, a cabinet minister said Tuesday.

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira told reporters that the caretaker government would hold general elections in three months in line with the schedule, reported Xinhua.

He said the caretaker setup would be finalised before mid-March with consensus of the opposition. He dispelled the impression that the government would delay the elections.

The remarks came amidst reports that Pakistan had drawn up a preliminary road-map under which the national assembly would be dissolved in January next year, a caretaker government installed and general elections held.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf would, however, take a final decision on the roadmap after consulting their coalition partners soon, the Urdu-language daily Jang reported.

The present assembly is going to complete its tenure March 16 next year.
