US First Lady Michelle Obama has given tips to women before they choose their life partners. In an interview to US Glamour magazine, Michelle Obama says, every woman should look beyond looks while selecting a partner.
For starters, looks aren't everything. 'Cute's good,' she said. 'But cute only lasts for so long and then it's "Who are you as a person?"'
In the interview, Michelle Obama warned women not to be swayed by how much money or prestige a man has. Instead, it is more important to see how he treats his mother.
'Don't look at the bank book or the title,' she added. 'Look at the heart. Look at the soul.
'Look at how the guy treats his mother and what he says about women. How he acts with children he doesn't know. And more important, how does he treat you?'
The 45-year-old mother of two - Glamour's first- ever First Lady cover girl - is pictured with her hair pulled back and wearing a stunning red dress that shows off her famously toned arms.
Michelle Obama, who has been married to President Barack Obama for 17 years, said she always knew he was perfect for her.
'He was always special, you know?' she added. 'And not special like, he's gonna be important, he's gonna be president.
'He was special in terms of his honesty, his sincerity, his compassion for other people. When you're dating a man you should always feel good. You should never doubt yourself. You shouldn't be in a relationship with somebody who doesn't make you completely happy'.
'And if you're in that relationship and you're dating, then my advice is, don't get married. Get out of it. And find that person who brings you complete and utter joy with who you are at the moment.'
However, it has not always been easy for the Obamas. In June, a book about the couple revealed how back in 2000 their marriage was on the rocks because of his obsession with his political career, reports The Mail, London.
As well as offering dating advice, Michelle Obama urged women to believe in themselves. 'I have always tried to put my kids first and then put myself a really close second, as opposed to fifth or seventh,' she said.
'One thing I've learned from male role models is that they don't hesitate to invest in themselves.'
Speaking of her status as a fashion icon, Michelle Obama said: 'People have a right to their opinions, particularly when you're First Lady - you're representing the nation. So I can't be surprised people are interested.
'But I've tried to be at peace with the choices that I make first, and then be open to everyone else's reflection.'
