Love never dies: Widow in UK fights to preserve her dead husband's sperm

London: A 28-year-old woman in UK lost her husband two years ago due to brain tumour and she has fought to preserve his sperm ever since. The widow Beth Warren is a physiotherapist in Birmingham.Warren Brewer was a ski instructor and he had his sperm frozen before having radiotherapy treatment for cancer and signed forms saying his wife could use it if he died.UK fertility regulator imposed a time limit on Beth Warren, which meant she had just over a year to conceive with the frozen sperms of her husband but Beth Warren challenged the storage time limit imposed by fertility regulator in High Court.Finally on Thursday she won the battle to preserve her dead husband's sperms.In normal circumstances, the law allows sperm and eggs to be stored for up to 55 years if consent is renewed every decade. But when Brewer died in February 2012, he had not given consent for this.A storage time limit imposed by the UK fertility regulator meant his sperm could only be held for three further years and it was due to be destroyed in April 2015. This meant that Beth only had over a year to conceive using sperm.The court has instructed the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority of UK - to store the sperm samples beyond April 2015 so that Beth Warren can use it to conceive a baby when she wish to.Initially the Human Embryo and Fertilisation Act 1990 allowed a maximum storage period of 10 years for sperm, but in 2009 regulations enabled that period to be extended subject to certain requirements.Beth Warren burst into tears as a High Court judge ruled the deadline should be extended to protect the couple's human right to a family life.The couple married in a hospice six weeks before Brewer's death in February 2012.Brewer's sperm was being stored at Care Fertility (Northampton) Ltd.
