Know the London beggar who earned Rs 50 lakh a year and lives in a Rs 3 cr flat

New Delhi: Thirtyseven-year-old Simon Wright earns £50,000 (Rs 50 lakh) a year and lives in a £300,000 ( Rs 3cr) Fulham flat in West London by simply sitting on the pavement next to his dog and a sleeping bag.To the world outside, he looked like a homeless beggar as passers-by gave him cash having pity on him. They however didn't know that he was earning over £50,000 a year and living in a £300,000 council flat.Simon is a professional beggar. He voluntarily opted this profession.His mother is a nurse and he was brought up with decent family morals.His father was a cloth dyer but his mother divorced his father and married a betting shop manager Martin Wright, with whom she went on to have two more children, Agnetha and Gareth. Wright took his stepfather's surname and was raised as his son.Simon's life took a wrong path when he was eleven. He stopped going to school and started spending time in bad company along with which he started taking druns, he thieved, begged and did many criminal acts.Aged 18, Wright became a father after his 16-year-old girlfriend became pregnant. But when his daughter was 15 months old she died of meningitis. In the years that followed, he lived rough and squatted with friends.Finally he chose to be a beggar and started using a sign saying he was homeless and people gave him money on that basis. Seated on the ground close to one or the other of stations, he would pester passers-by for cash. Those that refused were often subjected to a volley of abuse or, on occasion, bitten by his dog, a snarling, Labrador-sized cross between a boxer and a mastiff. He used to take the money from his cup and change it over at a local betting shop or amusement arcade.‘He worked pretty much every day, and had done so for about three years. He certainly put in the hours.' On many occasions he used to earn between £200 and £300. Magistrates have now imposed a two-year Asbo banning him from begging anywhere in London.The Asbo will remain in place until May 2015 but if Wright, who admitted fraud and begging, breaches any of its terms he could be sent to prison for up to five years and face an unlimited fine.Wright proved Putney High Street in south-west London was such a lucrative venue that he attracted up to nine other beggars.But Wright's days of fleecing the public are over. Magistrates have slapped an Asbo on him banning him from visiting the SW15 area (Roehampton and Putney) and from begging anywhere in the capital.
