Dubai: An Indian jewellery firm showcased three pairs of mammoth earrings, each weighing over 1kg and worth over 36 lakh rupees here in a bid to set a record, a media report said today.

Designed in the traditional Indian 'jhumka' style, the handcrafted 22-carat earrings were a tribute to the City of Gold, said G R Anand Ananthapadmanabhan, managing director of India-based GRT Jewellers.

"We wanted to impress Dubai with something special and big," he told Khaleej Times.

Looking like mini gold chandeliers, the mammoth earrings attracted a number of people, scrambling to get a glimpse of popular South Indian actress Nayantara, who unveiled the monumental pieces of jewellery at the firm's Karama outlet yesterday.

While no customer is likely to dare hang the one-to-two- feet-long ornament on their earlobes - perhaps the largest gold earrings in the world, Ananthapadmanabhan said the firm is open to selling them as collectors' pieces.

The firm also wished to apply for the Guinness World Record for the world's largest gold earrings.

"To my knowledge, nobody has made such big earrings so far," he added about the exclusive preview to commemorate GRT's successful journey of 50 years.
