New York: The heaviest snowfall of the season has blanketed  northeast America, with more than a foot thick snow falling in some places.

Schools and offices are closed, roads shut down and thousands of flights grounded.

Some 80 million people were on Wednesday digging their way out of a thick blanket of snow.

Snow began falling at mid-morning on Tuesday in Philadelphia and dumped as much as 14 inches by Wednesday morning, with New York seeing almost as much.

There was also heavy snow falling in East Rutherford, N.J., which will serve as the host site of Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2 that will feature the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks.

At New York's LaGuardia Airport, weary travelers spent a restless and sleep-deprived night on airport chairs and cold floors. Flight cancellations put hotel rooms in short supply.
