Baghdad : At least five people were killed and 25 wounded in a wave of violent attacks in Iraq Sunday, police said.





In northern Iraq, a suicide bomber blew up his explosive vest near a group of young men lining up at the entrance of a military base to sign up to be soldiers, in Mosul city, some 400 km from Baghdad.

It killed a recruiter and a soldier while leaving eight recruiters injured, reported Xinhua citing a police source.

A sticky bomb attached to a car belonging to the Iraqi finance ministry detonated Baghdad's Seliekh district, killing a woman employee and the driver while wounding three passersby, a police source said.

Elsewhere, a sticky bomb attached to a car detonated in Fallujah city, some 50 km from Baghdad, killing the driver and wounding another person in the car, a police source said.

Separately, two car bombs went off near two gatherings of Shiite pilgrims marking a religious ritual in Basra city, some 550 km from Baghdad, wounding 10 people, a police source said.

Three people were injured when two more car bombs ripped through Smawa city, some 270 km from Baghdad, a police source said.

According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, almost 7,000 Iraqis have been killed and over 16,000 injured from January to October this year.
