Football fans in Uruguay's capital, Montevideo, were overjoyed on Saturday (26th June) as they took to the streets to celebrate their team's second-round win over South Korea in the World Cup. Ajax forward Luis Suarez scored in each half to help Uruguay beat the Koreans 2-1 and advance to the quarter-finals for the first time in 40 years. With a population of around 3.5 million people, Uruguay is the smallest nation still left in the World Cup.
Having won the tournament in 1930 and 1950, the Uruguayans have struggled to make an impact in the past four decades, with a round of 16 exit in 1990 their best recent result. Luis Suarez put Uruguay ahead after only eight minutes in Port Elizabeth on Saturday against South Korea, and then scored the winner in the 80th. In swirling wind and rain, the Ajax striker sidestepped two defenders and curled a right-foot shot off the post from the edge of the area.
