Islamabad, Nov 2: At least 17 people, among them women and children, died in Pakistan Friday when gunmen opened fire at them after their van stopped for refuelling.



The attack took place at a petrol station in Khuzdar town of Balochistan province. Five women and three children were among the dead, Xinhua reported.

The van was carrying 16 people and was heading to Qambar area from Khuzdar. Eight died on the spot while nine others succumbed to their injuries in a hospital.

The injured, including fuel station staff, were shifted to hospital. A huge fire that broke out at the station was doused later.

The attackers fled in a car.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik blamed the militants for the attack.
