Amid growing ‘freedom protests’ in Balochistan, the United States has assured Pakistan that it does not support independence for southerwestern state of the country.

According to Pakistani daily Dawn, the US State Department has made commitments to Pakistan that it supports the country’s territorial integrity.

“The US government respects the unity and territorial integrity of Pakistan, and we do not support independence for Balochistan,” the Dawn quoted a State Department official as saying.

Another news website Dunyanews reported that the US has also distanced itself from ‘India’s effort’ to stir an international controversy over Balochistan.

“The US has distanced itself from Modi’s ‘provocative statement’ over Balochistan in which he blamed Pakistan for human rights violations and violence in Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir,” the report claimed.

The reports in the Pakistani media contradict reports quoting US Ambassador Richard Verma as saying, “I would let the Prime Minister’s comment stand on its own.”

‘Freedom protests’ gained momentum in Balochistan after PM Modi on the occasion of Independence Day backed for the regions freedom from Pakistani rule. He had even said that Pakistan have to answer the world about atrocities being carried out on the people of Balochistan and PoK.
