In a terrifying incident, an Indian student was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday for stabbing his pregnant girlfriend to death after she told him the baby was not his.

“The man, who goes by just Akash, displayed cruelty, brutality and callousness in murdering 22-year-old Gurpreet Kaur,” AFP quoted Auckland High Court judge Matthew Palmer as saying.

The judge stated that the two dated each other secretly for 12 months but Akash (24) snapped on April 7 this year when Kaur told him the baby was not his and she wanted to end the relationship.

Akash, who was high on methamphetamine, wildly stabbed her as many as 29 times and dumped the body in roadside bushes south of Auckland.

Initially, he pleaded not guilty asserting that the stab wounds were self inflicted. However, later in August, he admitted his guilt.

The judge stated that the fact that Kaur was 7 to 10 weeks pregnant made the crime even worse and her death even more painful for her family.

“Not only did you murder Gurpreet Kaur and deprive her family of her existence, but you deprived her and her family of the potential of another life,” said the judge.

Akash has been sentenced a life imprisonment of minimum 17 years behind bars.
