Three dead in hostage-taking at French supermarket, gunman killed

At least two persons were feared dead after a gunman, who claimed allegiance to terror group Islamic State, fired shots in a hostage-taking at a supermarket in southwest France today.

At least three people were shot dead after a gunman, who claimed allegiance to terror group Islamic State, fired shots in a hostage-taking at a supermarket in southwest France on Friday. Security sources say that the gunman has been killed. 

Two others were reported to be injured in the shooting spree. 

Meanwhile, a policeman involved in the freeing of all the hostages at the Super U supermarket in the town of Trebes was injured during the operation to kill the gunman. 

Jean-Valery Lettermann, the regional police chief said that the attack took place at a Super U store in Trebes, near Carcassonne.

Earlier, the Interior Ministry had said that main priority is the police and emergency services' intervention, adding that a security perimeter was established in the area.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that shooting, hostage-taking 'seems to be a terrorist act'.

The AP reported that French President Emmanuel Macron has asked Interior Minister Gerard Collomb to visit the incident site to assess the situation. 

Anti-terror prosecutors have taken over the investigation.
