A day after China said that it was ready to discuss Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership issue with India, Brazil, which had initially opposed New Delhi’s entry into the 48-member group, has hinted to back the south Asian country’s bid.
It is most likely that Brazil President Michel Temer, who is arriving here for BRICS Summit, may convey his country’s support for India’s bid during meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Economic Times reported that Brazil believes that India’s entry into the group will ensure global peace and stability.
“Temer could indicate Brazil’s support in his first meeting with Modi,” the report quoted people familiar with the matter as saying.
“The technical discussions on India’s entry into NSG are undergoing in Vienna. Brazil is of opinion that India’s NSG membership will contribute to global peace and stability,” a senior Brazilian government official told the daily on terms anonymity.
At the Seoul NSG meet earlier in June, Brazil had not opposes India’s entry into the club, but it did call for common criteria for countries that have not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
