New Delhi: While the ambitious project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao', is getting all round applause, there is no control over the advertisements related to sex determination being displayed over the e-commerce websites like Flipkart, Amazon, Junglee or Naaptol.

The books and other materials related to sex determination are being sold openly, unregulated on these online shopping websites which is a clear violation of the law. Section-22 of PCPNDT Act of 1998 clearly forbids any advertisement related to sex determination.

An NGO, Girls Count has filed a petition on change.org (an online petition forum) asking all the websites including Google and Yahoo to stop showing ads that promote gender biased sex selection. The petition is getting a considerable support.

A week after PM Modi launched his ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, the Supreme Court restrained search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft from advertising or sponsoring any advertisement on sex determination technologies in violation with the Indian laws.

In an interim order dated on January 28 a bench of Supreme Court justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C Pant said, "It is directed that Google, Yahoo and Microsoft shall not advertise or sponsor any advertisement which would violate Section 22 of the pre-natal determination of sex (PC-PNDT) Act."

A strong supporter of women empowerment PM Modi launched ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign on January 22. He is personally leading the campaign that has been launched in 100 districts with lowest sex ratio. Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit has been roped in as the brand ambassador of the campaign.
