Chennai: In a noble gesture, a senior Railway official, the first woman athlete from Tamil Nadu to receive the Arjuna Award, has donated Rs one lakh towards the Railway Minister's Relief Fund on her retirement.

V Anusuya Bai, who retired as Deputy Chief Personnel Officer/Welfare on August 31, handed over a cheque for Rs one lakh to Southern Railway General Manager Rakesh Misra, a release said.

"I feel just as a child that takes pride and feels happy putting food in her mother's mouth, even as the mother's hand feeds the child, contributing to my organisation, which sheltered and took care of me for 40 years of long official and sports career," an emotional Bai said.

Bai was the first woman athlete from Tamil Nadu to receive the coveted Arjuna Award for athletics in 1978.
